A teenage gang member was hacked to death by an angry mob for
stealing a mobile phone at Orok Orok by Mount Zion, Uwanse Calabar
South, with his other 5 gang members who fled, on Tuesday June 21.
The boy identified as Chigozie William, said to be in his late teens, according to residents
around the area had allegedly been terrorising the neighborhood, snatching
phones, robbing and raping, and was only released from the Afokang
Prison, Calabar last week.
The deceased also popularly called "Tukor" met his waterloo that
afternoon when he snatched a phone and tried running but was
overpowered,
beaten and subsequently set ablaze by the angry mob.
The former student of Atu secondary school, whose class mates wrote
their Senior Secondary school exams last year, is said to have died
before the police arrived the scene to rescue him from the mob.
"He came to our school this morning, threatening everyone and even
the principal. And ended up collecting the phone of some of the
students. He left before the police arrived", a teacher at Atu Secondery
school told our reporter in confidence as he doesn’t want to be named.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Force Command
in Calabar, Irene Ugbo said she’s not aware of the incident but will
investigate. His body was later taken aware by men of the Special Anti
Robbery Squad (SARS)
