Match Summary

Diego Simeone's side had done the job in the first leg with four away goals, although they made sure not to concede at the Vicente Calderon and give the Bundesliga outfit hope of staging a fightback.

Los Colchoneros could have added to the overall scoreline, but found Bernd Leno impenetrable at the back as the keeper made a couple of super saves.

Leverkusen needed a positive start in the Spanish capital and Kevin Volland almost provided it in the fourth minute when the German striker found space inside the area and fired just wide of the right post from a narrow angle.

Javier Hernandez wasted a promising move on 21 minutes as he blasted over Jan Oblak's crossbar from 12 yards out after being teed up by Julian Brandt.

Leno then pulled off two brilliant saves in the space of two minutes in the closing stages of the first half, first tipping Angel Correa's firm shot past the right post before getting fingertips to a fizzed effort from Koke that he pushed around the left post on 40 minutes.

Antoine Griezmann threatened to put the tie out of reach as he latched onto a through-ball from Yannick Carrasco in the 57th minute, but the French forward missed the target with a delicate chip.

A goalmouth scramble nearly led to an opener for Leverkusen on 68 minutes when Brandt collected the ball inside the area on the right and forced a sharp save out of Oblak, who then saw his defence come to the rescue with a block to deny Volland on the follow-up before Hernandez fired the rebound across goal and past the right post.

There were no further clear-cut chances as Los Colchoneros progressed to the last eight with ease.
